Background: With the recent growth in the field of interprofessional education, effective educational strategies are required to improve students¡¯ interprofessional competency in the health profession.
Methods: This study was conducted from August 13 to 24, 2021, using a one-group, pretest-posttest design. Third-year nursing (n=8) and dental hygiene (n=8) students participated in field-practice-based interprofessional education (FP-IPE) at a college of nursing in S city. Data were collected via a self-report questionnaire including professional self-concept, self-efficacy for group work, and communication competence. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach¡¯s ¥á coefficient, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test (SPSS Statistics Ver. 22.0).
Results: The results showed that there was a statistically significant increase in subjects¡¯ professional self-concept (Z=-3.26, p=.001), self-efficacy for group work (Z=-2.43, p=.015), and communication competence (Z=-3.09, p=.002) after participating in FP-IPE.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that FP-IPE as an educational strategy contributes to enhancing the professional self-concept, self-efficacy for group work, and communication competence of nursing and dental hygiene students. Accordingly, this study suggests the development and extended application of standardized FP-IPE as a direction for future studies.
